Combi boiler pressure fluctuation issues

Combination boiler owners; did you know that your boiler pressure is supposed to fluctuate? Let me explain, when your system is cold i.e. when your heating has been off for over an hour, the pressure gauge should read 1 bar – 1.5 bar (in the green triangle or by the grey segment for some boiler makes) and when your heating has been on for over an hour the pressure gauge should read 2 bar – 2.5 bar.

If you find that you have to ‘top up’ your boiler on a regular basis this generally indicates a problem such as a minor leak, if this is the case contact your installer. On the other hand you may find your pressure reaching the 3 bar mark, sometimes the filling loop can be left open, debris or sludge in your system or a problem with the expansion vessel.

Your installer should have made a point of explaining this at the time of the install however sometimes this is overlooked or details are forgotten. Should you have problems like this or any others you should seek advice from a Gas safe registered installer.
